FOSSIL COLLECTING IN MAYSVILLE, KY 9/18/10

Join Brenda Hunda, Cincinnati Museum Center Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology, and CNC Chief Naturalist Bill Creasey on a trip to Maysville, Kentucky for a fossil hunt. Visit a site that has lured fossil collectors for years, where there are multiple layers of rock to climb and you may keep what you collect. With each of the different strata, you'll find different kinds of fossils. While trilobites are not numerous, they are sometimes found. Gastropods are more numerous than in Avey's Run at Rowe Woods. Crinoids are plentiful, and it is not rare to find a partial head or holdfast in addition to the stems. Bryozoans are at this location and are sometimes found encasing a brachiopod! Brachiopods are numerous and the larger ones often have geodes inside them. You never know what treasures you'll find!

With Brenda on hand, you will have access to one of the region's best paleontologists. Brenda has a relaxed, easy-going style that makes her one of the most approachable scientists in our community. Meet at Rowe Woods at 9:00 am.  Pack a lunch, drinks and dress to be outdoors all day.
