NATURALIST EXPLORERS SPRING '12

Designed for youth ages 10-13 with a serious interest in the natural world, this program will blend outdoor skills training, purposeful exploring and guided off-trail forays to provide unique experiences available only through this program.

Jan. 21    Winter Walkabout    Search for saw whet owls in red cedars, learn to reveal the stories told in animal tracks and generally savor the winter. You won't want to miss the winter games. We'll round out the day with something warm and chocolaty. Dress in layers. Multiple layers of wool/synthetic socks recommended.

Feb. 18    Maple Sugaring: A Behind the Scenes Look    Check the sap pails, search for the tree with the most sugar in its sap, help with the evaporator and try maple sap mint tea. In the course of our sap gathering, we check the ponds for Jefferson salamanders.

Mar. 17    Fire as a Tool    Using safe practices, we'll explore how to build a fire then we'll try our hands at coal burning to craft wooden bowls. Plan to make some form of food on the fire. With luck, we may even have a chance to respectfully investigate some salvaged animals.

April 21    Lookout Trail "Look-see"   Boot up to explore one of the lesser used trails on CNC property.  Be prepared for surprises including off-trail jaunts, wild edilbes and animal tracks in the mud.

May 19    Avey's Run Creek Exploreing   Water is life.  Explore an untraveled section of Avey's Run.  Bring shoes that firmly attach to your feet and can get wet (water shoes or old sneakers are best) as well as a backpack to carry your dry shoes and socks.
