NATURALIST EXPLORERS FALL 2010

Designed for children ages 10-13 with a keen interest in the natural world, Naturalist Explorers blends outdoor skills training, purposeful exploring and guided off-trail forays to provide unique outdoor experiences.

4-session series.

Sept. 18  Hybrid Canoe/Stream Hike at Long Branch  A blend of wading and canoeing will reveal fossils, animal tracks, signs of beaver and a variety of other aquatic wonders. We'll use fish traps and seine nets to help us discover the marvels of the stream. We'll also scour the pawpaw grove in search of the "poor man's banana." Bring stream shoes and extra clothing.

Oct. 9  Terrestrial Salamander Coverboard Check at Long Branch  Head off trail to the woodland salamander survey arrays and be surprised by what you'll find underneath. Check soil moisture and temperature then measure and weigh ravine and redback salamanders before heading to the next coverboard. We'll also gather black walnuts for future use.

Nov. 13  Silent Stalking and a Visit with the Firekeeper at Rowe Woods  Head out on a silent hike as we delve into the history of the land.  Hone your stalking skills while we walk back in time then challenge yourself in blindfolded tree identification.

Dec.11  Cabin Cook-in at Rowe Woods  Practice your fire starting skills in the hearth of Abner Hollow Cabin and help put together a potluck stew.  We'll try out some primitive cooking techniques, crack our black walnuts and make the beams and walls of the cabin speak.
