SEARCH FOR THE ELF OF THE WINTER WOODS 1/7/12
Saw-whet owls are from the Great Boreal Woods. Every autumn they migrate south from northern breeding grounds. These hardy little owls regularly over-winter in Ohio and can be found roosting during the day in cedar trees, grapevine tangles, and honeysuckle thickets. When found, they are approachable and often sit motionless, curiously looking back at curious humans.
Spend a winter day tromping the woods at LBF in search of these secretive little owls.
Meet at the Creek Side Barn at 8 a.m. for a brief introduction on Saw-whet Owls and search techniques. Wear sturdy boots and dress for the weather.
Appropriate for adults and older youth who can hike and handle the cold for several hours.
